Before coming to Spain, Erasmus students had already watched a video prepared by the Spanish students explaining the legend of The Drummer of El Bruc.
The first activity done in Spain about this legend was to look for the most important words in the story and translate them into the languages of all the Erasmus students. With these words, they elaborated the following word clouds.
Then, a quiz was prepared with some of the words and questions about the legend.
The next day, students showed their knowledge about the legend of The Drummer of El Bruc by answering a quiz about the legend, which included some of words they had chosen from their word cloud.
After a visit to the mountains of Montserrat, from where the drummer (the main character of the legend) plays his drums and makes the French soldiers run away, the Erasmus students started their third day in Spain making a handcrafted drum using the drypoint engraving technique.
The festivity of Saint George is a day that is celebrated with a lot of enthusiasm and joy in Catalonia. On April 23rd, the streets of the cities and towns are crowded with people and stalls selling books and roses. It is about celebrating the patron saint of Catalonia and perpetuating this tradition based on love and culture, where roses and books become the main characters.
The legend explains that long ago, in Montblanc (Tarragona) a ferocious dragon had frightened the inhabitants of the city. The inhabitants, scared and tired of the dragon´s misdeeds, decided to calm him by feeding him one person a day that would be chosen randomly in a draw. After several days, the princess was the unlucky one. When the princess headed towards the dragon, a gentleman named Saint George suddenly appeared to rescue her. Saint George raised his sword and stabbed the dragon, at last releasing the princess and the citizens from this turmoil.
From the dragon’s blood a rose-bush grew with the reddest roses that had ever been seen. Saint George picked a rose and offered it to the princess.
So the first activity related to this legend done in the school was to show Erasmus students how to make a handcraft rose.
After this, students searched for information about the legend of Sant Jordi and prepared very visual presentations in groups using Canva. Saint Jorge, a dragon, a princess, roses and books are the most important elements in this legend.
