Myths and Legends in The Library.
Today we were delighted to welcome our ERASMUS + group from Belgium, Spain and Denmark to our school and take them on a tour of Ballymahon. Our day commenced with and a very hearty IRISH breakfast served to all. Our visitors then took a tour of our school, meeting different subject departments, staff and students. Students played Hurling and Football and concluding the school tour with a very uplifting Irish Music Harp and Fiddle concert. Students enjoyed the creative writing ‘Fighting Words’ workshop hosted by the Erasmus team and Ballymahon Library where students created their personalised legends and mythological stories. Thank you Pierina from Fighting Words and all the team at Ballymahon Library.
Another busy day for our visiting Erasmus + team. Our group were taken on a fantastic and historic visit of Athlone and its surroundings. Eurolegends were treated to a memorable sightseeing experience of the river Shannon by boarding on the ‘Lake Viking Splash trip’ and got to see first-hand the beauty of our main river and its surroundings. After a delicious lunch at Athlone Castle, they took a very informative tour of the Castle’s Myths and Legends and one we highly recommend. After a very busy day we returned to BVS where a mouth watering dinner (Traditional Shepherd’s Pie and Eton Mess with local Colehill Strawberries) was served to our group by the very hardworking and imaginative Home Ec department.
Another very busy and exciting day for our friends over from Spain, Belgium and Denmark. Our entire team traveled to Corlea Trackway, Kenagh which is a key location of the ‘Etain and Midir’ Legend. At Corlea the group where they received a splendid welcome, presentation and movie experience from the very warm and professional staff. Corlea is the heart of the project’s Midir and Etain legend. We received a very informative walking trail and tour where the group explored the very rich Irish heritage as well as the bog flora and fauna. In the afternoon the group took in another fantastic amenity in our area, the Royal Canal and we had a most enjoyable time Kayaking around Brannigan Harbour.

Galway Myths and Legends
The group enjoyed an incredible day at Galway Museum where Eurolegends took a mythological journey of stories and legends. Princess Gaillimhe and native fishing village Claddagh, The Spanish Arch, The story of the Little Red Fox and Butcher and the ubiquitous Children of Lir Legend are among the myths and legends which featured during our tour of the Museum. This was followed by a Guided Tour of Galway where visitors stepped into the past stories and legends featuring times past.
Creative Ardagh ‘Etain and Midir’ Pageant
Today the Mobility concludes with an enactment of the story of Etain and Midir. Heritage in Schools Workshop Facilitator Anne Smyth provided students with an opportunity to reImagine the Etain and Midir characters in a story central to Ireland’s legend and mythological world.
This was followed by student presentations from each Country and a delicious traditional farewell lunch with Irish Stew and Icecream Wafer Sandwiches generously hosted by Ballymahon Vocational School home economics department.
